» Effect of print column width on reading comprehension

I have noted that journals and newspaper put their articles into columns, and that often, reports, are not put into columns. I imagine that journals and newspapers use columns in their layout for various reasons. My question is what cognitive pyschology research shows regarding what the best column width is for ease of reading and optimum comprehension.Hi, prometheus-u, I'm interested in this question too. Are you thinking about print only, or are you also asking about length of line on web pages? And are you expecting to see an answer expressed in terms of inches (or picas) or, say, number of characters of a certain size? Your name makes me think of a very long, difficult paper I wrote for a class called Romantic Poets when ...... - 2009-07-04

» Algebra Problem, help please?

I have lots of others like this, but I just want to figure out how to do it, so I can do the others myself.. Here's one example: Find the Partial Fraction decomposition of the Rational Function: (-2x^2 + 5x -1)/(x^4 - 2x^3 + 2x - 1) More details and guides would be appreciated ^^First we need to factorise the denominator as far as it will go. We find that x^4 - 2x^3 + 2x - 1 = (x + 1)(x^3 - 3x^2 + 3x - 1) = (x + 1)(x - 1)(x^2 - 2x + 1) = (x + 1)(x - 1)(x - 1)^2 = (x + 1)(x - 1)^3, so (-2x^2 + 5x -1)/(x + 1)(x - 1)^3. (I did this by guessing likely roots (1 and -1) and using synthetic division.) So we need one term for each factor in the denominator, hence we let (-2x^2 + 5x -1)/(x + 1)(x - 1)^3 =...... - 2009-07-04

Please include source.Thank you!The average is approximately $26,000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Incom...Yeah, the more specific you make your query, the more accurate of a result you'll obtain. If you go to http://www.bls.gov and search for a given profession, say, office manager, you'll get official wage stats by region, by range, whatever you like. This would depend on whether you were looking at a white women, disabled, person of color etc. Please be more specific. All groups have different median incomes.More than the average income of most men in the world. That would vary job-to-job and be a factor of education and experience. In what field? » Really hard Stuff..

Well, i decided to make a script, that you can play Hang-Man on! Yada yada yada.. But im stuck. I need to be able to pull the word from a DB(already done) but the hard part is, the user has to be able to Guess that word through letters.. Is there a way u can split that word up? Maybe like a search function, er something?:(I believe you're looking for str_split(), which turns "String!" into {"S","t","r","i","n","g","!"}. However, I would just use the stristr function, which is a case-insensitive searche for a string inside another string. For instance, if they guess A and the word is hangman, stristr("hangman","A") would return "angman". If the word was "Bob Hope", it would return FALSE. Hope this helps! Here is a qoute impossing problematic probabilities: The euphemism kills of sport maybe "Let's eat!" We all heard this and can vigourously identify. The assumption is "Let's eat!" and reflects the course of a match. We watch soccer noticing bits of time upon impact. The impromptu whole discussion is reformed around play after fouls, closure, and whistles. These key ingredients hinders victory as well as attitudes. Indeed players shall be observational and not interrupt time, "The shot was close." or "The place was too near no resulting impact." Just like the quote "Let's Eat." Yes, Leeds United fouls alot and they suffer dier consquences, however, thier shot selection is one too fear!Originally posted by DamonEsquire Here is a qo...... - 2009-07-04

This bloke is a star! Can play in defence or midfield, and already has the captains armband. Man of the match against Southampton, and our best player (with JR) at Anfield. I think Koumas has the stuff to do good things for us, but Megson's got to give him more of a chance. Subbing him out for Dichio at Anfield was a mistake, IMO. The talk on 'other' Spurs boards has been about lack of investment by Daniel Levy in another striker and defensive midfielder. These are what we really need. Levy is banging on about 'lack of funds'. What better way to boost funds then by signing a slitty-eyed gook to send those shirt sales sky high in the land of the yellow peril? I am planning my brother in laws bachelor party and am curious as to how much it would cost to get a stripper in the Albany/Saratoga, NY area. We are going to be using Tops in Bottoms but I cant manage to get a price without actually booking the entertainment. Has anyone ever used this company and knows how much 1 stripper would be? Or does anyone have a general ballpark figure that has gotten this type of entertainment before? http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12634865/ New TV, radio ads aim to ease bird flu fears Government hopes campaign will prevent scare over chicken products The Associated Press Updated: 7:01 p.m. ET May 4, 2006 WASHINGTON - Hoping to prevent a scare over deadly bird flu, the government is distributing television and radio commercials assuring people that chicken is safe to eat. “Mmm, that chicken looks great. But what about bird flu?” a man asks in one of ads. His wife says she read that bird flu is unlikely to reach people’s dinner plates. “And even if it did, we have the power to ensure our chicken is safe,” she says. Apparently the Daily Mirror, I can't be arsed to find the link now, is trying to blame Roeder's situation on the fans. Now for the jack ass who threw the bottle thru the window of the Roeder estate, yes that could be blamed. It could be a fan or just some jack ass vandal. To blame the fans for booing a product they are paying big money for is ridiculous. Terry Brown needs to look in the mirror and wonder if he is to blame for the situation. Had he opened up the checkbook and bought some talent in the window maybe we would be a few notches above where we are today and things would be different all around.Originally posted by panicfc Apparently the Daily Mirror.............. I've read somewhere that you're supposed to cut them, but how and with what? Beeswax candles are expensive for this reason. Cut it with a pocket or utility knife; while holding the candle over the trash container. The large pillar candles need to be burned for a good length of time, each time, to burn best. The first time you light it is especially important. You need to burn a 3" diameter candle for 3 hours minimum (4 inch, 4 hours, etc) the first time so that the whole center of the top of the candle melts. China like every other government is trying to raise revenue so its up to their people if it seems fair or not, depends on what they have planed for the tax money on the fuelAgain. » 1 httpd process with 75% of CPU resources won't die! reboot of httpd required

Racking my brains here - 5 days now. Installed 2.0.1 version of VB and wanting to make switch from UBB. As expected, since this is an APACHE based php, VB is opening an httpd process, but, it NEVER DIES until I physically reboot httpd via telnet. One httpd process (or more if I move around in the program) lingers forever and ends up using every bit of CPU usage. This happens when I go anywhere in the program (it doesn't matter which page). I do not have it live since that would kill the server in just a few seconds. Current PHP version: 4.0.0 Zend engine version: 1.00 mySQL is version 3.22, however, phpinfo lists the client as 3.23.10-alpha (not sure why) LINUX Redhat 6.2 with 2.2 kernel Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) PHP/4.0.0 mod_...... - 2009-07-04

» Could America have another civil war?

I understand; this has been asked before, I have read the answers, so I would like to ask a bit more differently. One would say that you simply need two sides in order to get a civil war to start, and that a civil war in America couldn't possibly happen again because you don't have two sides. That factions (if any) are too split up. Yet, there are actually two factions: Republicans and Democrats, and with this recent election, there was quite a lot of heat. Now comes my question; since there was SO much heat, what would happen if popular Democratic politicians were assassinated by Republicans? Then, popular Republican politicians were soon assassinated. The news would be all over it, and suggesting that politicial rival...... - 2009-07-04

Justin Gage (vs Det) Vincent Jackson(vs Atl) Anthony Gonzalez (vs Cle) I'm not sure which ones of these guys to start. Gage was only projected for 3 points by ESPN, which completely throws me off whether or not to start this guy. What do you guys think? Will the Titans just run the ball all day? Im leaning towards Vincent Jackson, hes seem to be the favorite receiver by the goal line. I would go with Jackson. Chambers has become more of a short-route receiver while Jackson and Malcolm Floyd are more inclined to run the deep routes. Cleveland doesn't have a pass defense so Manning will probably find Harrison and Wayne open all day. He probably won't need to look for Gonzalez too much.
