A white guy speaking african french in france?

  • Does it sound funny to French?

I was recently in France with friends, the member of our group who can speak French(and did most of the talking for us) learnt working in Africa, and apparently speaks okay as he does interpreter work for contractors over there.

But a lot of people smiled or made some reaction to the way he talked in France. Some even made fun of him in front of other french people. We did not realise of course, until he told us later they had done it.

  • well, African French does have a distinctive sound to it, but it's not like it's any weirder-sounding than Quebecois French. If anything it sounds more like Francais de France.

However, if he learned it there, maybe he has a very distinctive accent that is a mix of African French and his native language?

  • I have have 2 Asian friends who speak French with some African accent (they worked there). At first, it sounds funny but it's great! We, French should be more open to other accents in French. I think, English speakers are more tolerant with this.

  • Good try,but i wonder how it sound, but dont go making a spectacle of yourself.
