Are commonwealth games 2010 are a misplaced priority for India in the age of space missions and nuke deals ?

Logically - Yes. The country has a million things it should be putting in front of the Commonwealth Games. Basic infrastructure, including hospitals and basic health care should be the first priority.

Politically - it makes perfect sense. India seems to be desperate to prove that it is a world power. Hosting a major sports event will help get them more publicity. It also makes political sense for the Commonwealth Games Governing Body, as this shows they are inclusive and not dominated by white people.

Economically - It makes good sense for India, as it will promote foreign investment and tourism. For the Commonwealth games Governing body it also makes economic sense, as they will sell a lot of merchandise in India, and generate a lot of money in ticket sales.
