How can you stop candles burning in the middle and leaving the outside intact but useless?

  • I've read somewhere that you're supposed to cut them, but how and with what?

  • Building on what B Anne said: each time you burn the candle, the melted area will never get any wider than it was the last time you burned it. But it can get narrower if you burn for a shorter period of time. So to get the most out of the candle, devote enough time to it -- every time -- for the wax pool to reach its maximum size.

(With very large candles some narrowing is probably inevitable, though.)

  • Beeswax candles are expensive for this reason. Cut it with a pocket or utility knife; while holding the candle over the trash container.

  • Yes, it depends on the quality and type of wax and then length of time you burn it.

I just use the leftover wax to make my own candles. For inexpensive ones in a glass jar that had that habit of only burning down the center I will melt the wax in a coffee can in water then pour it in to the jar with three standard candles for wicks. With three wicks it will not burn down the center.

  • After trimming bees wax save the wax melt linseed oil and add bees wax to make a very superior furniture polish or heat neats foot oil and add neats and add the bees wax to makes excellent leather preservative but be warned after treating leather with this mixture it will never take a shine again. It's a shame to waste any anything as valuable as bees wax.

  • The large pillar candles need to be burned for a good length of time, each time, to burn best. The first time you light it is especially important. You need to burn a 3" diameter candle for 3 hours minimum (4 inch, 4 hours, etc) the first time so that the whole center of the top of the candle melts. Hope this helps.

  • They need to burn longer. The larger the diameter the candle the longer it needs to burn at a time. 3 inches in diameter 3 hours. It burns even all the way around that way.
