Question about napoleon Bonaparte:did the system of embargoes on England work? why or why not?

  • It worked out reasonably well but ultimately, the British fleet gained naval superiority and patrolled the coasts of Europe at will, allowing smuggling to and from the continent to flourish. I doubt leaders from either side expected a blockade to be 100% effective over hundreds of miles of coastline.

The UKs vast colonial empire also served as a safety net for trade and supplies, meaning continental Europe probably did not have it any better, especially once the British took greater control of the oceans.

  • It did in a way. Britain's exports dropped dramatically but increased prices and large scale smuggling increased Britain's trade profits. Also until 1812 Britain was trading with America and its overseas empire which helped the country stay out of debt. In 1811 trade was reopened with Russia which effectively nullified any effects the embargo would have since British goods would flow through Russia and into the rest of Europe.
