What happens if I decided not to activate credit card?

  • I applied for a credit card from Credit One bank after I got an offer in the mail, but now that I got it I decided that I don't want it or need it. Apart from that, the annual fee is ridiculous. They already sent me the statement for a $75 annual fee with a min payment of $20 even before the card itself arrived. Can I just not activate the card and ask them to close the account? I don't need the card and that annual fee is ridiculous.

  • I totally agree with you concerning the fee, but my bet is that even if you close the account, they will still expect payment of the fee and will report to the credit bureaus if you do not pay it or pay it late. The best thing to do is call them immediately and follow-up with written correspondence that upon review of the account disclosures you have decided not to activate the card. Good Luck. Don't screw up your credit over $75.

  • Don't use it, don't activate it, don't pay it. Call the number on the back, tell them you don't want it and that you don't think you should have to pay. When they say no (as they probably will), cut the credit card up and send it back to them with a picture of a big middle finger.

  • jagsfan,

You just answered your own question..
That IS all you have to do....
When you call them..they are gonna ask you why you want to close the account...
"BECAUSE A 75 DOLLAR ANNUAL FEE IS FREAKIN RIDICULOUS..." is probably not a good answer...LOL..
You could just say I decided on another card or heck..maybe the truth IS the best option....
either way...GOOD LUCK..and get rid of that card!!!

    :-)

  • Send them a letter telling them you changed your mind and do not want the account with that annual fee. Request written confirmation that the account is closed and 0 balance. Keep the request and confirmation in your 'forever' financial file, just in case.

  • Yes just send them a letter stating you wish to close the account. You better do it before your due date on the bill though otherwise your account will be reported as a late payment.

  • Just send it back.

  • i would call them up AND send a ltter in writing that yo udo not want the card.

75 bucks that is ridiculous. fraudulent.

  • Send them a letter of cancelation and the card and their statement . I would sed it registered mail reciept requested. Which is your prove you sent it to them
