Why do americans call football 'soccer'

  • To distinguish it from gridiron football. The origins of American football are linked to rugby, also called football, where the hands are also used more often than the feet in terms of controlling possession of a game ball.

According to the etymology dictionary, "soccer" was slang from the late 19th Century as an abbreviation for "assoc." as in Football Association (as they could hardly have taken the first three letters!).
